The Music Teacher

Click on image to view a larger version I enjoy teaching very much and have very good results with my personalized teaching methods. It's one thing to be a great musician or performer, and it's another thing to be able to teach someone else what you know. Although I'm considered by many to be a very good player, I take pride in the fact that I'm regarded as an excellent teacher. The ages of my students have ranged from 8 to 80.

In my experience, 45 minutes is typically the right amount of time to review last weeks lesson, go over the new lesson, and make sure the student knows what to practice and how to practice correctly. Thirty minutes should be the shortest time for a lesson, and on occasion I've even given 2-hour lessons. There is no shortcut for practicing, regardless of how musically gifted someone might be. Contrary to other teaching techniques I've seen, the goal of the lessons are to get the students to the point where they no longer need me, and as quickly as possible. Obviously, the time it takes to learn something may vary drastically from person to the next. The amount of practice time, level of experience, and natural ability and desire, will all be determining factors. Starting from point 0, it usually takes one to two months before being able to play well enough to start sounding good and become inspired to want to continue to get better.

Within four to six months most students are able to go on without the aid of further instruction. At that point they are able to play a wide variety of songs, and have reached the all-important first major level.

If someone's interested in pursuing additional instructions after that, there's still plenty of room for growth, and I'm qualified to, and would be happy to teach them. I've been teaching for over thirty years, and I still learn something new every day.
